Prof. Fredolin Tangang is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, which he joined recently. Previously, he was a Professor of Climatology in the Department of Earth Sciences and Environment, Faculty of Science and Technology, at the National University of Malaysia (UKM), where he also served as Head of the Department until his retirement in 2023.
Prof. Tangang obtained his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Canada, in 1997, where he developed a model for forecasting El Niño. He served at UKM for nearly 37 years. In 2011, he was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. In 2017, he was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at Ramkhamhaeng University, Bangkok, Thailand, to support the development of the university’s Center for Regional Climate Change and Renewable Energy (RU-CORE).
From 2008 to 2015, during the IPCC AR5 cycle, Prof. Tangang served as Vice-Chair of Working Group I of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In the IPCC AR6 cycle, he was a Review Editor for Chapter 10. From 2015 to 2024, he was a Scientific Team Member (SAT) of CORDEX, an international program for regional climate downscaling under the World Meteorological Organization, where he also led and coordinated CORDEX Southeast Asia from 2013 to 2022. From 2019 to 2021, he was a member of the scientific steering committee of MAIRS-Future Earth.
Prof. Tangang has completed over 30 research projects and published more than 140 scientific papers in international journals.
