On 12 November and 4 December 2024, the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) was invited to introduce APN and the 2024 Call for Proposals to the Transdisciplinarity for Early Career Researchers in Asia (TERRA) School. The TERRA School 2024 was hosted in Kyoto, Japan, by the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) and Future Earth Japan. Eighteen early-career researchers from twelve countries participated at the TERRA School on the RIHN campus: Brazil, Cambodia, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
On behalf of the APN Secretariat, Dr Nafesa Ismail (Senior Programme Officer) and Ms Naomi Young (Programme Officer) introduced APN and its Call for Proposals under the Collaborative Regional Research (CRRP) and Scientific Capacity Development (CAPaBLE) programmes during a virtual seminar in November 2024. A specific emphasis was placed on the high-priority sub-regional topics for 2024, eligibility requirements and timeline for submissions. The session also highlighted the special consideration of early career professionals submitting proposals under its Call for Proposals. This initiative and special consideration recognises the pivotal role of early career professionals in sharing scientific advancements for a sustainable future and nurturing their capacity through opportunities with APN.

During the onsite seminar on 4 December 2024, Ms Young provided key guidance and advice on submitting proposals for funding to the APN Secretariat, with a focus on content and preparation considerations for success. The Asia-Pacific Network of Early Career Professionals (APN-ECAP) for Global Change Research initiative was also introduced as a recently established platform by which early career professionals could connect and network amongst like-minded colleagues working in the global environmental change space. The newly formed LinkedIn Group was introduced, as well as the other opportunities available through APN, such as its Proposal Development Training Workshops and internship programme. Participants also engaged in a Q&A session after the presentation to facilitate networking and specific queries regarding the APN Call for Proposals and other early career professional opportunities at APN.
Aligned with APN’s Fifth Strategic Plan, which focuses on enhancing scientific capabilities and supporting science-based decision-making, these seminar opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region are successful in encouraging collaborative research and capacity development activities led by global change practitioners, researchers and early career professionals. For detailed eligibility requirements for ‘Early Career Professionals’ in the APN Call for Proposals, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
